Written while Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned by British colonial authorities from 1942 to 1945, The Discovery of India traces the subcontinent’s past while asking what gives its civilization continuity across immense diversity and repeated political change. Nehru moves from the Indus Valley Civilization and Hindu scriptures through successive invasions, empires, religious movements, and the expansion of British rule. Historical scholarship shares space with personal reflection as he considers how inherited traditions, foreign influence, social structures, and anticolonial politics shaped the India of his own time. The book is therefore both a broad national history and a statesman’s meditation on cultural identity, written as the struggle for independence approached its decisive final years.
