Apollo, stripped of immortality and trapped in the body of teenager Lester Papadopoulos, must rescue five ancient oracles from three Roman emperors before he can regain his divine status. Accompanied by Meg McCaffrey and Grover Underwood, he enters the Labyrinth in search of the Oracle of Erythraea. Its riddles lead the group toward Palm Springs, Caligula’s plans, and a burning ancient sun god whose danger extends beyond the emperor’s ambitions. A prophecy warning that one member of a returning party may die hangs over their efforts, including an infiltration of Caligula’s ship. The middle-grade fantasy mixes Greek and Roman mythology with comic self-importance, forcing a former god to rely on mortal friends while learning what heroism costs them.
