In Nazi Germany, young Liesel Meminger lives with foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann after her brother’s death. Hans patiently teaches her to read and write, and Liesel begins stealing books, finding in language a refuge from political persecution and wartime fear. That refuge becomes dangerous when the Hubermanns hide Max Vandenburg, a Jewish man, in their home. Liesel’s bond with Max grows through words and shared stories, while friendships and her connection with the mayor’s wife widen her fragile world. Narrated by Death, the novel views ordinary lives under Nazism through a voice both intimate and ominous, tracing how literature and love can preserve human connection amid organized cruelty and loss.
