Paul Bäumer and his German schoolmates enlist for World War I after absorbing their teacher’s patriotic instruction. On the Western Front, lofty ideas of honor collapse into mud, hunger, bombardment, and battles that consume lives without producing meaningful gains. The resourceful older reservist Katczinsky becomes Paul’s mentor as the young soldiers learn that survival depends less on courage than on instinct, companionship, and chance. Yet even temporary escape offers no restoration: during a visit home, Paul discovers that civilians cannot understand the front and that he can no longer inhabit his former identity. This semi-autobiographical war novel follows a generation stripped of youth and belonging, portraying combat not as adventure but as an exhausting machinery of physical destruction and emotional estrangement.
