Michael Thomas Ford’s Suicide Notes follows fifteen-year-old Jeff, who wakes on New Year’s Day in a psychiatric hospital with bandaged wrists. Convinced that his admission is a mistake, he sees himself as fundamentally unlike the other young patients around him. Over the next forty-five days, however, Jeff gradually comes to understand why he is there. His experience also leads him to recognize unexpected common ground with his peers. The novel centers on the distance between Jeff’s initial certainty and his developing understanding, tracing a period in which his assumptions about both his hospitalization and the people sharing it begin to change.
