Othello, a Moorish commander serving Venice, has married Desdemona and earned public authority through military success. His ensign Iago, nursing grievances and concealing his intentions, sets out to corrupt that trust. By exploiting the promotion of Lieutenant Cassio and Desdemona's efforts on Cassio's behalf, Iago turns ordinary encounters into apparent evidence of infidelity. The action moves from Venice to the military outpost of Cyprus, where isolation allows insinuation to outrun proof. Othello's love and confidence give way as jealousy begins to govern what he sees, while Emilia becomes entangled in her husband's scheme. Shakespeare's tragedy examines manipulation, race, marriage, and military honor through the widening gap between what characters know, what they suspect, and what an audience can see.
