Description

Set in New York City around 2000 and 2001, the novel follows an unnamed young woman alienated from her post-college life. After losing both parents, she grows increasingly dissatisfied with her privileged existence on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. When she also loses her gallery job, she devises an extreme attempt to reset her life: spending nearly an entire year asleep. An unconventional psychiatrist supplies a growing regimen of prescription drugs to help her sleep as much as possible. Rather than providing the fresh start she seeks, her escalating medication use leads to dangerous blackouts and deepens her isolation, further complicating her withdrawal from ordinary life.
