Sixteen-year-old Jackie is accustomed to order, control, and carefully planned goals. After her parents die in a car accident, she leaves New York City for Colorado to live with her mother’s best friend and a household crowded with twelve children. The noisy, unpredictable Walter family offers little privacy and none of the familiar structure Jackie relies on while grieving. Her adjustment grows more complicated when two of the boys see her not as a new sister but as a romantic possibility, drawing her into divided loyalties and unwanted uncertainty. The story pairs a large-family comedy of collisions and mishaps with Jackie’s attempt to rebuild a future that can accommodate loss, belonging, and feelings she cannot organize in advance.
