Olive is a Stanford biology PhD candidate who relies on evidence and careful reasoning—except when an impulsive attempt to help her best friend creates a fake relationship with Adam Carlsen, a young professor known for his severity. Olive needs Anh to believe she has moved on from an ex-boyfriend. Adam has his own practical motive: convincing the science department that he plans to remain at Stanford so it will release his frozen research funding. As they perform affection for colleagues and friends, the arrangement complicates Olive’s assumptions about romance and makes their supposedly false feelings increasingly difficult to dismiss. Against the pressures of academic research and Olive’s work on pancreatic cancer, the novel uses mutual convenience to explore vulnerability, trust, and unexpected attachment.
