Poppy Wright, an adventurous travel writer, and Alex Nilsen, her reserved, home-oriented best friend, once spent every summer vacation together despite wanting very different lives. After a decade of trips, one disastrous holiday leaves them estranged for two years. When Poppy realizes that her dream career has not made her happy, she contacts Alex and proposes one more journey: a wedding trip to Palm Springs that might repair their friendship. An uncomfortable rental, one bed, broken air conditioning, and unresolved feelings make ordinary companionship difficult to maintain. Alternating the reunion with memories of earlier vacations, the romance gradually reveals how their bond formed, what fractured it, and whether two people who feel at home together can reconcile incompatible ideas of happiness.
