Seventeen-year-old Mia Hall is an aspiring concert cellist living with her family in Portland, Oregon. On a snowy day, a car crash kills her parents and leaves her severely injured. While Mia lies in a coma, she experiences events from an out-of-body perspective, moving unseen through the hospital as relatives, friends, and other loved ones gather. Flashbacks return to her family life, her devotion to the cello, her relationship with Adam, and her persistent sense of not fitting in. Caught between life and death, Mia faces a choice: remain with Adam and her surviving relatives or join the family members she has lost.
