An unnamed young woman has been dating Jake for only a few months and is already considering ending the relationship. Nevertheless, she agrees to accompany him through wintry isolation to meet his parents at their remote farm. During the long drive, philosophical conversations and awkward questions expose uncertainties neither can settle. At the farmhouse, strange details about Jake’s family make ordinary hospitality feel subtly wrong, while traumatic memories and disjointed perceptions begin to unsettle the narrator’s identity. The return journey eventually leads to an abandoned school, where Jake disappears inside and she follows, sensing that someone is pursuing her. The novel compresses romantic doubt, loneliness, and psychological dread into an increasingly unstable test of what can be trusted.
