Conventional English academic Philip Swallow leaves Rummidge for a six-month exchange at a university in the American state of Euphoria, while accomplished professor Morris Zapp travels in the opposite direction. Each expects temporary displacement but gradually discovers freedoms and satisfactions in the other’s institution. Their parallel adjustments unfold amid student unrest, pushing both visitors into unexpectedly public roles on campuses whose customs expose the assumptions they brought from home. The swap also crosses into their private lives through affairs involving one another’s wives. David Lodge’s comic campus novel uses transatlantic contrasts to examine academic vanity, cultural difference, marriage, and the unsettling appeal of becoming someone else somewhere new.
