In an idyllic corner of rural England, corrupt parliamentarian Sir Giles plans a motorway whose route will enrich him while helping him dispose of his formidable wife, Lady Maude. He expects official machinery and private influence to carry the project smoothly across the countryside. Instead, Lady Maude enlists Blott, her enigmatic gardener, whose adopted English patriotism makes him fiercely protective of the threatened landscape. Their resistance escalates from obstruction to elaborate acts of sabotage, throwing bureaucrats, contractors, and political calculations into disorder. Tom Sharpe turns a dispute over development into a broad political farce about greed, marital warfare, misplaced nationalism, and institutions unable to control the chaos produced by their own schemes.
