At Totleigh Towers, Bertie Wooster is supposed to recover an antique cow creamer that Sir Watkyn Bassett acquired through deceit. His errand collides with Gussie Fink-Nottle’s faltering engagement to Madeline Bassett and with Stiffy’s campaign to overcome her uncle’s opposition to her own marriage. When a missing notebook of insults gives Stiffy leverage, she blackmails Bertie into staging a fake theft, while the menacing political leader Roderick Spode watches for any threat to Madeline. Bertie’s efforts to satisfy everyone only deepen the household’s suspicions, leaving Jeeves to impose order on a maze of romantic misunderstandings, social obligations, and escalating farce.
