Seymour “Swede” Levov, a celebrated Newark athlete turned successful glove manufacturer, believes he has achieved the ideal American life: a thriving business, a beautiful wife, a daughter, and a country home in Old Rimrock. During the upheavals of the 1960s, however, his teenage daughter rejects the prosperous world he represents, commits a deadly political bombing, and disappears. Swede’s ensuing search forces him to confront the instability beneath his family’s respectable surface and the limits of his own understanding. Narrator Nathan Zuckerman reconstructs this collapse after hearing about it from Swede’s brother, turning one family’s disaster into an examination of generational conflict, social violence, and the dangerous stories Americans tell about innocence and success.
