Mickey Sabbath is a sixty-four-year-old former puppeteer whose life has curdled into unemployment, sexual compulsion, and deliberate provocation. He manipulates the people around him, especially women, and treats transgression as both a private creed and a weapon against conventional life. When his longtime mistress dies, the loss breaks the structure of appetite and secrecy that has sustained him. Grief sends Sabbath careening through memories of lovers, enemies, family, and failure, while his present actions generate a series of humiliating, often farcical disasters. Haunted by the dead and drawn toward madness, extinction, and suicide, he becomes the abrasive center of a dark comic novel about mourning, desire, self-destruction, and the limits of shamelessness.
