Krish, a Punjabi student, meets Ananya, a Tamil student, in the mess hall at IIM Ahmedabad, and friendship develops into a serious relationship. They intend to marry, but after graduation and the start of their careers, romance becomes a campaign to win approval from two families divided by language, region, custom, and pride. Krish tries to make himself useful to Ananya’s relatives and arranges a concert opportunity for her mother, hoping personal goodwill can overcome inherited suspicion. Each gain, however, reveals another source of conflict, including tensions within his own family. Narrated by Krish with self-deprecating humor, the novel treats marriage not as a private decision but as a negotiation between two people and the social worlds that claim them.
