Antoine de Saint-Exupéry reflects on his life as an aviator when flying airmail meant crossing the Sahara and the Andes in fragile aircraft, often with little protection from weather, terrain, or mechanical failure. His account moves between hazardous routes and the human bonds formed through shared responsibility and danger. In one central episode, a crash in the Sahara leaves him and his navigator walking for days without food or water, reducing existence to endurance and the hope of rescue. Yet the memoir treats aviation as more than adventure: its lyrical episodes consider solitude, courage, fellowship, and humanity’s place in an immense natural world. Flight becomes both lived experience and a way of thinking about what makes a life meaningful.
