Description

When a waitress named Toki and Sayama, a key witness in a government-corruption investigation, are found dead on a beach, authorities conclude that the lovers took their own lives. Veteran detective Shigetaro Torikai doubts the convenient explanation, especially after recalling how two waitresses happened to see the pair boarding a train together. Detective Mihara Kiichi joins the inquiry and begins reconstructing the journeys surrounding businessman Tatsuo Yasuda, whose connections to the ministry scandal place him near the case. The investigation turns on routes, schedules, observed moments, and an apparently secure alibi. Tokyo Express is a methodical crime novel in which patient reasoning must uncover how public corruption and private calculation intersect behind a meticulously arranged appearance of innocence.

About Matsumoto Seichō

Seichō Matsumoto helped popularize detective fiction in Japan by treating crime as an inquiry into society as well as individual guilt. His direct, spare narratives draw suspense from ordinary routines, psychological pressure, and the patient testing of facts. Police conduct, official corruption, and the disillusionment of postwar life repeatedly enter the investigation. In Tokyo Express, two suspicious deaths lead detectives through train routes, schedules, observed moments, and a carefully engineered alibi, with a government scandal shaping the case beyond the immediate crime. Matsumoto also extended this investigative approach into politically charged nonfiction, using unresolved incidents to examine American power and Japanese institutions in the postwar period.
