Across linked stories, Tim O’Brien follows an American platoon in Vietnam and the memories that continue long after combat. A lieutenant carries a young woman’s letters alongside responsibility for his men; a frightened draftee considers escaping to Canada; and a returned veteran circles a hometown lake, unable to explain what the war has made of him. Drawing on O’Brien’s military experience while deliberately blending invention with memoir, the collection asks whether factual accuracy and emotional truth are always the same. Weapons, photographs, superstition, shame, and grief become forms of weight. Rather than offering a political history, the book examines how violence alters moral judgment and how storytelling carries experiences that ordinary testimony cannot contain.
