Patricia Highsmith’s psychological thriller introduces Tom Ripley, the first protagonist in her series of Ripley novels. A wealthy businessman sends him to Italy with a specific assignment: persuade the man’s wayward son to return to the United States. During the trip, however, Ripley develops a plan to take over the young man’s identity and finances. The novel follows the dangerous turn produced by that plan, placing a scheme of impersonation at the center of its suspense. By focusing closely on Ripley and the identity he wants to acquire, Highsmith builds a story around ambition, deception, and the risk of discovery.
