As World War II reaches France, sisters Vianne and Isabelle respond to occupation through sharply different forms of resistance. Vianne, a schoolteacher and mother, struggles to keep her daughter alive after her husband becomes a prisoner of war. Hunger, financial hardship, and German officers billeted in her home force her to make dangerous choices, including hiding Jewish children. Isabelle takes a more direct path, joining the French underground and guiding downed Allied airmen toward neutral Spain. Known as the Nightingale, she becomes a hunted operative, while Vianne’s quieter work carries risks of its own. Through the sisters’ divided experiences, the novel examines survival, moral courage, family loyalty, and the many ways civilians resist when violence enters their homes.
