Description

Blind since childhood, Marie-Laure learns to navigate Paris with the help of a detailed neighborhood model made by her father. When German forces invade, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo. In Germany, orphaned Werner has an exceptional gift for building and repairing radios, a talent that takes him from an orphanage to an elite military academy and eventually into tracking Resistance signals. Anthony Doerr’s novel alternates between Marie-Laure’s and Werner’s experiences, moving nonlinearly between earlier years and the Battle of Saint-Malo. Against occupied Europe and the destruction of World War II, both characters struggle to survive while trying to preserve their humanity amid violence.
