Twenty-nine-year-old Valancy Stirling lives in early-twentieth-century Deerwood, Ontario, under the constant judgment of an overbearing extended family. Her only freedom lies in a private imaginary refuge she calls the Blue Castle. When a doctor tells her that she has a fatal heart condition, fear gives way to resolve: believing her time is short, Valancy stops obeying the rules that have governed her life. She leaves home to care for Cissy, an ostracized childhood friend who is gravely ill, and grows close to Barney Snaith, a solitary man burdened by local rumors. Valancy’s rebellion unfolds as both romance and self-discovery, testing whether a woman taught to fear disapproval can claim companionship, independence, and joy on her own terms.
