Traditionally attributed to Laozi, the Tao Te Ching presents eighty-one compact meditations on living and governing in accordance with the Tao, the elusive “Way” underlying the world. Its brief verses return to humility, simplicity, flexible strength, and wu wei: action that does not strain against the nature of things. Paradoxes unsettle familiar assumptions, suggesting that emptiness can be useful, softness can overcome hardness, and leaders may succeed through restraint rather than display. The text stands at the center of philosophical and religious Taoism, though its authorship and date remain debated. Because its ancient Chinese terms allow broad and sometimes contradictory meanings, every translation becomes an interpretation, making the work both accessible in fragments and resistant to final explanation.
