Scholarship student Nikki Maxwell already feels conspicuous among the wealthy students at her private school, especially because her father works there as an exterminator. When a school talent show creates a chance to perform, Nikki enters while trying to keep that embarrassing family connection hidden. Her rival MacKenzie threatens to expose the truth, turning rehearsals and competition into a struggle over Nikki's place at school as well as her confidence onstage. Nikki must manage friendship, humiliation, and the possibility of public failure without letting MacKenzie control the story. Told through diary entries, doodles, and comic exaggeration, this third Dork Diaries installment uses a performance crisis to explore status anxiety, loyalty, and the gap between appearing confident and learning to accept an imperfect self.
