After two influential men are killed, MI6 forces teenage spy Alex Rider back into service. Both victims had rebellious sons enrolled at Point Blanc, an isolated academy in the French Alps, so Alex assumes the identity of a billionaire’s wayward child and enters the school undercover. Its students arrive difficult and defiant but soon become unnervingly obedient, polished, and alike. When Alex’s new friend James attempts to escape and is seized by guards, Alex begins probing the academy’s restricted areas and its methods. Cut off in the mountains and surrounded by adults who control every movement, he must uncover what is happening before he undergoes the same transformation. The novel combines boarding-school menace, espionage gadgets, physical danger, and a conspiracy built around manufactured perfection.
