Greg Egan’s Permutation City is a science-fiction novel set on a near-future Earth reshaped by climate change and global economics. Brain scans can generate conscious digital copies, while vast computing capacity is bought and sold through the QIPS Exchange. Some affluent or committed people create personal backups, yet these copies have no legal human rights. Intersecting characters include an artificial-life enthusiast trying to save her dying mother, a traumatized billionaire banker, and lovers inhabiting a timeless virtual world. Through artificial life, simulated reality, and quantum ontology, the novel asks whether human identity can become data and what digital immortality means when access to it remains economically unequal.
