January Andrews has built a successful career writing romance, but grief and the discovery of her late father’s affair have left her unable to produce another hopeful ending. While preparing his beach house for sale, she encounters Augustus Everett, an acclaimed literary novelist and her former college rival. He is blocked too, and their old competitiveness inspires a summer challenge: each will attempt a novel in the other’s genre. Research excursions and shared writing sessions force them beyond their familiar subjects while steadily complicating their assumptions about one another. Their wager becomes both a contest between competing ideas of fiction and a test of whether January can reconcile love’s painful realities with the stories she tells.
