This volume approaches Paul Klee through the visual language and ideas that made his work difficult to place within any single modern movement. A Swiss-born German artist and accomplished draftsman, Klee drew from expressionism, cubism, and surrealism while investigating color with unusual persistence. Music, poetry, and literature informed his search for an organic, harmonious form of painting, and his images often combine humor, shifting moods, childlike perspective, and rhythmic structure. His teaching at the Bauhaus alongside Wassily Kandinsky also led to influential lectures on form and design. The book’s central subject is therefore not merely a recognizable style, but the relationship among observation, theory, play, and musicality in Klee’s art.
