Kunta Kinte grows up in Jufureh, The Gambia, within a Mandinka community shaped by family, farming, tradition, and demanding coming-of-age instruction. An ambush tears him from that life and forces him through captivity, a brutal Atlantic crossing, and sale into slavery in Maryland, where enslavers impose the name Toby. Kunta resists through repeated escape attempts and through his determination to preserve his identity despite violent punishment. The novel then follows seven generations of his descendants in the United States, tracing how family stories survive slavery and continue through changing eras of African American history. By linking one man’s remembered homeland to a vast American lineage, the narrative makes genealogy a struggle against the erasure of names, origins, and inherited experience.
