Newly out of rehabilitation, Mallory Quinn takes a live-in job caring for five-year-old Teddy Maxwell. The position offers routine, privacy, and a chance to rebuild her life, and she quickly bonds with the shy boy and his ever-present sketchbook. Then Teddy’s innocent pictures give way to a disturbing sequence: a man dragging a dead woman through a forest. As the drawings become more sophisticated and unnervingly realistic, Mallory begins to suspect that they reveal an unsolved murder through supernatural means. Interpreting the images may be the only way to protect Teddy, but pursuing them also threatens her fragile stability and credibility. The novel blends domestic unease, psychological suspense, and supernatural horror around the question of who will believe a compromised witness.
