Ten-year-old India Opal Buloni arrives in Naomi, Florida, for a summer in a trailer park with her preacher father, who remains withdrawn after the wife who left them years earlier. At a supermarket, Opal claims a scruffy dog causing havoc and names him Winn-Dixie. His openhearted curiosity draws her into conversations with townspeople whose private histories reveal different forms of grief and loneliness. As Opal works at a pet store to buy him a collar, befriends Gloria Dump, and plans a gathering for her new acquaintances, she begins building the community she lacks. The novel follows how a stray dog helps a lonely child ask difficult questions about her mother, understand her father, and recognize that friendship cannot erase loss but can make room around it.
