Born as the third son of a noble drow house, Drizzt Do’Urden enters life under an expectation that he will be sacrificed to the goddess Lolth. He survives to grow up in Menzoberranzan, an underground city governed by cruel competition and a matriarchal order that abuses him for being male. Trained as a warrior, Drizzt excels at the city’s combat academy while resisting its effort to reshape his conscience. Patrols through the Underdark expose him to the violence his people inflict on other races, making obedience increasingly impossible. After he secretly spares a surface-elf child, he and his like-minded father consider escape from House Do’Urden. The novel traces a young warrior’s struggle to preserve moral independence inside a society that treats compassion as treachery.
