Blanche DuBois arrives in New Orleans penniless after losing her family home and moves into the cramped apartment shared by her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley. Nervous, deceptive, and uncomfortable in bright light, Blanche tries to preserve an image of refinement while drinking heavily and avoiding questions about her marriage and recent past. Stanley distrusts her from the start, resenting both her manner and the disruption she brings to his household. Blanche’s hopeful connection with his friend Mitch offers the possibility of stability, but Stanley’s scrutiny steadily closes around her. The play pits vulnerability and self-invention against suspicion and domination, making the apartment a charged arena for conflicting ideas of desire, class, truth, and survival.
