About J. K. Rowling
J. K. Rowling is a British author whose fiction spans fantasy, contemporary social fiction, and detective novels written as Robert Galbraith. She conceived Harry Potter in 1990, and the first novel appeared in 1997. The series established her characteristic way of placing extraordinary events within familiar institutions, especially schools and government offices, where rules, rivalries, prejudice, and failures of authority shape the action. Direct, descriptive prose, comic detail, and mystery plots make that world accessible, while loss and death give the seven novels their emotional and thematic center. As the series develops, its early school mysteries broaden into conflicts over propaganda, institutional denial, political control, and the uses of power. Her later work moves beyond fantasy: The Casual Vacancy is contemporary fiction with historical influences, while the Cormoran Strike series draws on hardboiled detective fiction.
