After high-school student Hannah Baker dies by suicide, Clay Jensen receives seven double-sided cassette tapes recorded in her voice. The thirteen messages connect classmates and events that Hannah holds responsible for her growing despair, tracing how rumors, stalking, harassment, exploitation, sexual abuse, and betrayals of trust accumulated across two school years. Clay listens through the night, revisiting familiar places as Hannah’s account changes his understanding of people he thought he knew. Although she says he treated her kindly and does not deserve blame, his presence on the tapes forces him to confront what he missed and why she included him. The novel’s alternating voices turn private testimony into an examination of complicity, memory, and the consequences of seemingly separate acts.
