Seventeen-year-old aspiring poet Juan García Madero leaves university and plunges into the Mexico City orbit of the Visceral Realists, a wandering literary movement led by Ulises Lima and Arturo Belano. The poets are searching for Cesárea Tinajero, an elusive predecessor whose absence turns literary devotion into an actual quest. Juan’s first-person account frames the opening and closing sections, while the expansive middle leaps across two decades and several continents through more than forty testimonies. The witnesses offer contradictory portraits of Lima and Belano as bohemian drifters and arrogant elitists. Their pursuit finally converges in the Sonoran Desert, where a pimp and a corrupt police officer turn avant-garde mythology into danger. The novel makes artistic ambition inseparable from friendship, displacement, and the unstable stories people leave behind.
