In the American Southwest, motherless teenagers Alice, Corvus, and Annabel form an uneasy friendship while the adults around them prove restless, confused, and incapable of offering reliable guidance. Their movement through an eccentric, conspicuously artificial landscape brings them into contact with omens and grotesque spectacles: preserved corpses inhabit a nursing home, while a wildlife museum displays dead people as though they were alive. Around their journey, separate lives and episodes unfold through grief, desire, illness, artistic obsession, and spiritual searching. Joy Williams uses dark comedy and philosophical unease to blur distinctions between the living and the dead, the visible and the unseen, creating a novel about people seeking meaning in a world that resists stable explanations.
