Amir grows up in a wealthy Kabul household alongside the devoted son of his father’s servant, a friendship that crosses Afghanistan’s divisions of class and status without escaping them. Amir longs for his father’s approval, but a childhood betrayal of his friend becomes the source of guilt that follows him into adulthood. As political upheaval, war, refugee flight, and the Taliban transform Afghanistan, Amir’s private history remains bound to the country he left behind. Years later, an opportunity to confront what he did forces him to reconsider loyalty, courage, and the meaning of atonement. The novel joins an intimate story of fathers and sons to a broader account of exile, lost homes, and the difficult possibility of redemption.
