Description

Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle follows Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkus and his extended family as they arrive in Chicago seeking financial security and the American Dream. Jurgis finds work in a meatpacking factory, where industrial efficiency coexists with brutal conditions. A deceptive housing contract carries hidden costs that force additional family members to work, while falling wages, sickness, injuries, and unsanitary labor make survival increasingly precarious. Through union involvement, Jurgis becomes aware of political manipulation and deliberate abuses in the meat industry. At home, he confronts his pregnant wife’s exploitation by her employer and responds violently. The novel examines immigrant hardship, working-class poverty, unsafe labor, and corruption protecting those in power.
