In 1815, ship’s officer Edmond Dantès is preparing to marry Mercedes when jealous rivals arrange for him to be accused of serving as an enemy of the state. Imprisoned without trial in the Château d’If, the despairing Dantès encounters Abbé Faria, a neighboring prisoner who offers him friendship, hope, and a map leading to a great treasure. After escaping from prison, Dantès assumes the identity of the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. Armed with his new position and the knowledge of those responsible for his imprisonment, he begins planning revenge against the people who destroyed the future he once expected to have.
