Winter Santiaga has grown up in Brooklyn protected by the wealth and reputation of her father, drug kingpin Ricky Santiaga. Brash, status-conscious, and accustomed to getting her way, she treats beauty, money, and notoriety as tools of survival. When her father is arrested for trafficking, that protected world collapses and Winter is placed in a girls’ home. Determined to recover her lifestyle, she turns to illicit trade, betraying alliances and creating a violent rivalry with former coconspirator Simone. A fictionalized Sister Souljah offers her shelter and a vision of responsibility to Black communities, but Winter resists any lesson that threatens her desires. Told in hip-hop-influenced slang, the novel follows ambition hardened by privilege into a struggle over loyalty, identity, and consequence.
