In the remote Ten Thousand Islands of southwest Florida, sugar planter Edgar “Bloody” Watson becomes the center of a frontier legend built from rumor, fear, and alleged violence. The novel first assembles competing testimony from neighbors who watched Watson rise, each voice exposing the community’s prejudices and uncertain loyalties. It then follows his alcoholic son Lucius, whose effort to determine whether his father was truly a murderer becomes an obsession with evidence he can never fully master. Finally, Watson speaks for himself, tracing the path from his South Carolina childhood toward confrontation with the people around him. Reworked from three earlier novels, Shadow Country examines how history hardens into myth amid racism, isolation, and communal complicity.
