In a climate-ravaged, deeply unequal United States beginning in 2024, Black teenager Lauren Olamina records the unraveling world around her in a journal. She lives in a fragile gated community near Los Angeles and secretly prepares for its collapse, while hyper-empathy forces her to feel the pain she witnesses in others. When the community is destroyed, Lauren travels north with two survivors through a landscape shaped by scarcity, poverty, and violence. Survival requires disguise, vigilance, and difficult judgments about whom to trust, but Lauren is also developing Earthseed, a belief system centered on change and humanity’s ability to shape its future. As she gathers companions, her journey becomes both a flight from social breakdown and an attempt to build purpose beyond it.
