In postwar America, young writer Sal Paradise is drawn to Dean Moriarty, a restless, charismatic friend whose appetite for movement turns ordinary life into a series of departures. Between 1947 and 1950, Sal crosses the country through cities, highways, bars, jazz clubs, and migrant communities, repeatedly returning to a more settled existence before Dean pulls him back onto the road. Their journeys promise freedom from convention, but spontaneity carries costs for the friends and lovers caught in Dean’s wake. Divided into five parts and rooted in Jack Kerouac’s travels with Neal Cassady, the novel couples propulsive, jazz-inflected prose with a growing awareness of exhaustion, abandonment, and the distance between seeking experience and understanding it.
