Louisa Clark becomes personal assistant to Will Traynor, a young man whose life changed radically after an accident left him disabled. Their relationship begins in hostility: Will resents his dependence and the limits of his present routine, while Louisa has little experience of the world he once traveled. She eventually learns that he has attempted suicide and intends to end his life after giving his mother six more months. With help from her sister, Louisa plans outings meant to revive his ambitions and persuade him that a worthwhile future remains possible. Their growing intimacy develops under that deadline. The novel combines romance with an emotionally charged conflict over love, autonomy, disability, and whether caring for someone grants any claim over the choices they make.
