In Amity, a Long Island resort dependent on summer visitors, a young woman is killed in the ocean and her remains reveal the presence of a predator. Police Chief Martin Brody wants the beaches closed, but local officials fear that acknowledging the danger will ruin the town’s tourist economy. When further attacks follow, ichthyologist Matt Hooper identifies the shark as an unusually large great white. Brody, Hooper, and a professional shark hunter eventually carry the pursuit onto the water, where expertise, fear, and clashing temperaments become as dangerous as the animal itself. The novel combines creature horror with a conflict over money, civic responsibility, and the human impulse to deny a threat until denial is no longer possible.
