Ten-year-old Hà loves her home in Saigon, where papaya grows beside the house and her family maintains its routines despite the approaching end of the Vietnam War. When danger forces Hà, her mother, and her brothers to flee, a crowded voyage carries them toward an unfamiliar life in Alabama. There Hà must learn English, endure classmates who mock her name and accent, and reckon with homesickness, anger, and uncertainty about the father her family has lost. Told in spare, image-rich verse and inspired by Thanhha Lai’s own childhood immigration in 1975, the novel follows displacement from the inside, capturing how a refugee child rebuilds belonging without surrendering memory.
